Guidelines
In order to assist grant seekers and ensure that applications fall within its grants program, The O'Grady Foundation offers the following guidelines for submission of proposals.
The Foundation's primary focus is on providing seed funds for projects in playwriting and the visual arts. A secondary focus is on providing early support for filmmakers. Recognizing the difficulty artists and smaller arts organizations face in finding first or "start-up" funds to produce or exhibit new work, the Foundation actively seeks to respond to this essential need.
Grants will normally be restricted to organizations within the five boroughs of New York City. Capital grants will be rare and generally limited to vital equipment and resources necessary for the function of programs.
Theater companies and exhibition/performance spaces with a track record of at least 10 years presenting or producing work in New York City may apply. Independent theater artists, visual artists, and filmmakers with at least five years of documented professional work and whose work will be developed, produced or presented at established institutions may apply with the fiscal sponsorship of these or other established 501(c)(3) organizations.
Grants will generally range between $5,000 and $20,000. Requests for multiyear grants – a maximum of two consecutive years – will be considered.
All application materials must be submitted electronically. Please see How to Apply for this information.
Applicants may submit grant requests to the Foundation at any time. Notification of grant awards will normally occur twice a year, in late summer for requests received before May 31, and late winter for requests received before November 30. Project timelines should take into account the Foundation's review and notification process since no grants will be awarded retroactively.
Whenever possible, the president of The O'Grady Foundation will visit or meet with applicants in advance of the final grant decisions.
